Broad Cove Drugstore
I am writing concerning the picture that appeared in the August 2012 issue of Downhome in the Reminiscing flashbacks section on page 126. The picture is of Broad Cove, Conception Bay, coming down over the hill that we call Butt's Bank. The building that you see near the bridge was once a drugstore. The owner was Arthur LeGrow, who used to live in the house up the road. The people would all go there to get their prescriptions filled or if they needed some more medicines. I can remember going there and getting cough medicine that was so black and thick it would take your breath away, but it sure cured the cough. It used to be in a big dark bottled in the back of the store. And you could ask for whatever size bottle you wanted, after he blew the dust off. I can also remember my mother going there and buying worm powders that were in a little folded paper, something the size of a stick of chewing gum. She also bought wart pencils that you would cut the top off to see if your warts would go away. If they didn't go, you would get an old man to charm them away. My grandfather used to do that many times, but you had to believe. You could also buy real strong liquid in bottles to cure head lice. Also fine-toothed combs to come out the nits. Also car sick tablets. You could buy them loose, whatever quantity you wanted. I used to take them when I would go in St. John's in taxi to see my father in the sanitorium. You could also get boric acid that you could bathe your eyes with to get rid of pink-eye, and toothache drops or ear ache drops or castoria to cure diarrhea. There was no paint on the store, inside or out, but the wooden floors were super clean. This was a popular hangout outside the store at night, where the boys and girls would meet. It was so dark at night with no lights, most times we didn't know anyone was there except for the glow of the cigarettes they would be smoking. You were only allowed to hang out on weekends, no school nights. Submitted By: NULL
