"bored without toys when i asked dad one winter day, if i could have the horse and sleigh, he looked at me as oft’ before... as if to say my son’s a chore. retorting to this teenage boy, the horse and sleigh is not a toy. how oft’ i’d ask if i could sail, knowing full well again i’d fail. but having naught all day to do, why not ask for his new canoe. again he dashed all hope of joy, the canoe and sail is not a toy. one summer day in hot july, as flowers bloomed and hay was high. i thought i’d try some time to pass. asked for the scythe to cut the grass. again i heard from man to boy, the scythe my son, is not a toy. each teenage year in new game season, i thought for sure i’d have a reason, to ask dear dad his fathers son. can i please have the old shotgun? better had i to request the jet flying by, for the old shotgun was not a toy. i must have really got his goat, the day without asking for the motorboat, i slipped the mooring with a boyish grin, and cruised the harbour again and again. flags nearly flew at half-mast, when i split in two the old crankshaft. i told him so at the supper table, thinking tomorrow i may be unable. saved only by his impending doubt, came not a word from his busy mouth. yet in his mind and that glaring eye, i heard, the motorboat is not a toy. time sure does quickly pass, from sails, canoes, horses and grass. as today a boy came up to me, to ask with voice now crackle free, if he could borrow my pride and joy, dear son said i, the car, is not a toy. © 1995 kevin paynter "   Submitted By: NULL
