Canada's first street railway opened in Toronto on September 11, 1861. The horse cars of the Toronto Street Railway Co. were small affairs, generally 16 feet in length, with open platforms. Unheated in winter, the cars' only comfort to passengers was a layer of straw spread about the floor, offering only minimal protection from the elements. This view, about 1888, shows a single horse car on Spadina Avenue at Seaton Village.   Submitted By: NULL
