Black Island Home
Dear Downhome,
In 1964, the people of Black Island, Notre Dame Bay, were resettled to different communities because there was a problem getting teachers or ministers to come there. Lots of people settled in Little Burnt Bay and went back each summer to fish until they found jobs elsewhere.
It’s been a long time but recently a friend gave me these verses about the island. If it’s not too much trouble, I would like to see them printed in the Downhome.
Thank you very much,
Annie Harris

In a quiet little village enclosed by the sea
I spent my happiest days there, light-hearted and free.
May God’s blessings rest on it; Wherever I roam
I’ll never forget my Black Island home.
Though ‘twas only an island surrounded by the sea
There the people were happy, God-fearing and free.
Sure we’ll cherish it always in our hearts and minds
That dear little hometown we’ve left far behind.
In a little white cottage I came as a bride.
We were happy together and worked side by side.
There we brought up our babies in God’s love and fear
And its memories grow fonder with each passing year.
There was fishing and farming but now it’s all gone
Our fishermen worked hard in daylight and dawn.
But they loved every minute; the Call of the Sea
Had captured enchantment, especially for me.
And we have come to this harbour so fair
We have found friends among you, to which none can compare.
And my God bless and love everyone in my prayer
You have bidden us welcome to live with you here.
If our memory wanders to the island sometimes
To old friends and acquaintances left far behind,
May God’s blessing rest on it. Wherever I roam,
Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.
