I am writing to pass on a recent fishing experience here on the Avalon this past April. My ol Grandpa told me to never tell a lie about fishing so to the best of my ability this is the gospel, according to me.

On April 10th I was fishing for sea trout along the beach at Spaniards Bay with my 5-foot light rod and small reel with 4-lb line when I had a huge hit and the line began to run. The fish jumped several times 3 or 4 feet in the air and at the last jump another fish, slightly bigger, came out of the water and swallowed the first one I had hooked. I knew I had big fish because every time they cleared the water I could see it drop a few inches and then go back up when they went back in. They made a wild run for North River and I ran chasing them over rocks, beaches, cliffs and gullies. I kept the rod high to keep the hook in and set and almost lost them several times as we went up North River to the Motion, up the river itself and into the country. At one point, maybe several kilometers in, we all stopped and rested and then off we went again. As they entered Gould’s Pond after crossing the Trans Canada via the culvert (that was hard for me) I managed to land them. The bigger one was 27 inches and the larger one which had swallowed the smaller one was 28 inches. I would estimate that they weighed about 8 lbs a piece when we started out in Spaniards Bay but after the long and grueling run over many kilometers they only weighed 4 lbs each and I had lost about 6 lbs in the run myself. Not a bad catch for an 18-hour experience. We took pictures and the negatives weighed 3 pounds.
