Big Arm Harbour, 1924

This photo was given to me by my brother, Harold Horwood, when I visited him in September 2006. He said that it was found in one of the local houses. The date on the original was 1924. The harbour in the picture is called "Big Arm" by the locals. It's in the community of Durrell. There were lots of flakes and stages in those days. What a change, no more boats on the collar! The Smiths owned most of the property in the picture.
Notice the potato beds. The laneway on the left continued on to the country, where my grandparents lived. Their house is still in good condition, and occupied by my cousin, Joyce Horwood.
I have been told that my grandfather would use his wheelbarrow to take caplin from the boat to his potato ground. It was a long way upgrade to "the country" as we called it. By the way, the wheelbarrow had a steel wheel and had to be pushed over a gravel road. Boy how things have changed since the cod are no more!!
In those days people knew what they had to do to survive and it involved a lot of hard work.   Submitted By: NULL
