Bell Island Reunion

Hi Fellow Newfoundlanders: A reunion photo which was posted in the Downhome edition (March) created a lot of interest.  We had phone calls, emails which lead to a brunch at the Rise and Shine restaurant in Morriston, Ontario.  I took my Newfoundland flag and my Downhome magazine (I never leave home with out it). They were overjoyed when I asked if they would like a photo taken to send down to the Downhome Magazine.  All of these people are originally from Bell Island, Newfoundland.  We have not seen these people for over 60 years. We were not fortunate enough to stay home and work because the mines closed down in the sixties, leaving over twelve thousand people with out work and forced them to move to another province.  I always tell people I was an immigrant in my own country.  My mother bought me a train ticket on a red letter day for $18.00 to travel by train to Toronto, Ontario.  The government gave me no money to move.  Then I had to work for three months before I had medical insurance. It is a lot different now!  Time really changed! A little humour: the train was so slow they called it the Newfie Bullet.  The only train you could get 6 meals a day. I love the people from Bell Island. We did not feel sorry for ourselves, we picked ourselves up and moved on.  The rest of Canada were the real winners, getting all these special people from Bell Island. Front row left to right: Phil and Judy Craig, Isabelle Power, Jeanette Clark, Calvin Power. Back row left to right: Howard Power, Tom Clark, Sheila Power, Elaine Power, Mary Power, Bob Power. Thank you, Phil and Judy Craig
