Being Dyslexic Can Be Magic
The Editor
Dear Ron, I was proud to live and work in Newfie back in the 1970s (as an engineer with Eastech Nfld, Ltd.) and when I returned to England I became a dyslexia teacher. Imagine my interest when I read 'How did English spelling come about' on page 51 of your September 2012 issue of Downhome. I thought you might like to print the following piece of poetry that I wrote a
few years ago which is quite relevant. Keep up the good work.
Many thanks and best wishes from Mick Ford

Being Dyslexic Can Be Magic
What does a poor Dyslexic do
when he can't spell 'who'
How does he cope
when he can't spell hope.
When he tries to spell 'dad'
and it turns out bad
and 'crab' gets upside down
and raises a frown -
being dyslexic can be quite hectic.
What does a dyslexic do
when he can't spell 'to'
How does he cope
with too much rope
When 'two' ones are 'two'
and it all sounds 'oo'
and blew and blue
get mixed up too
being dyslexic can make you panic.
What does a dyslexic do
with words like 'through'
how does he cope when the going's tough
and he's had enough
when he thought he ought
to know 'although'
and words like 'cough' are really off -
being dyslexic can drive you frantic.
But what a dyslexic can often do
may very well surprise you too
they're very often very bright
at getting other subjects right
at good ideas and art and sport
businesses of any sort,
having a lateral thinking brain
is not a pain -
being dyslexic can be really magic.
