Tulum, Quintana Roo (Mexico) - the first Mayan city discovered by the Spaniard conquerors in the 16th century and the only walled Mayan city known to exist on the seashore.

The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Mayans. El Castillo is more beautiful to be seen in person. As El Castillo is "the observation of the sky" and was considered of importance to the Maya, which can be seen in stone carvings like the image of the "Descending God," symbolizing the setting sun.
