Baltimore’s Dream
I'm sending you this poem which I wrote in 2008, depicting Lord Baltimore's perception of present day Ferryland as opposed to Ferryland in the 1620s when he resided there. Now there was no lighthouse there in those days but strangely enough in his dream the first place he finds himself is at the lighthouse and it wasn't at all as he imagined it to be. He also had a special wish he hoped to fulfill. I wandered to the Lighthouse It wasn't there before In my mind I had a picture But in fact it was much more There were people all around there All dressed in colors bright No one that I recognized It was a pleasant sight. Crowds were milling all around And all so very nice "We have some lemonade and cake Why don't you have a slice?" I thought I'd chat with the Keeper But I was much despaired Technology was master there No Keeper is living here. Walking toward the village The scenery was sublime Yet not unlike what I recall From another time. I saw some people digging As I was passing by Are they seeking buried treasure Should I stop and ask them why? I stepped into a coffee shop As long the road I trod, And viewed some scenes upon the walls Of a time when Fish meant Cod. A gift shop also stood nearby With trinkets and things galore Knitted goods and pottery Most anything you'd wish for. The old colonial kitchen With scuttle and poker hung To me it sure brought memories Of a time when I was young. I sat at a table of plenty Where music from the rafters did ring A spread set out before me Befitting to a king. It was called a dinner theatre Oh, what a place to dine I noticed some Bed and Breakfasts too I'll visit them next time. This little house beside the road Now that I don't recall Even their names I do not know I'll drop in and say hello Proudly at the easel he stood With oil and brush in hand A picture he was painting That would pride any man. "My name is Stu Montgomery And I'm mighty glad you came I've heard so much about you And your claim to fame" The picture he was painting To me it likened so And the lady there beside him I might have known her too Said Stewart with consternation "My God, you know you do. They live just there across the road Neighbors of me and you." To that I paid but little mind And then I strolled along to the Arts building And see the goings on. I took the steps on at a time And as I was ascending I saw a sign upon the wall An election was pending. I gazed in awe at all I saw I was quite amazed I looked and mused and pondered As the ladies plied their trade. Pray - tell me please, what all this means I've not been here before "Oh, just a few knickknacks and this and that From the Mansion of Lord Baltimore." I looked all 'round, how my heart did pound And a gleam came to my eyes The fruits I knew from the digging crew On the roadside as I passed by. "You say these things all once were mine" And much to their chagrin Says I, "I'll take them with me If you'll neatly pack them in." I gazed out o'er the ocean All around the town And musing to myself I said "Once - all on this was mine?" I looked upon the old stone church O'er looking this great land One wish, Oh God, please grant me To be Mayor of Ferryland. Who is this fellow Baltimore? I'm sure he is no fool His name is bandied all around Why it's even on the school! Now this place I must visit Oh, it's called a museum I'd better take a look inside Or I'll be beholdin' to Maxine. Oh my, I have no Passport It has me worried sore Perhaps they'll overlook it Knowing I was here before! Election Day is nearing Oh God, who will it be? Just two are in the running David Kirke and me. I looked on toward the Legion Club The vote had taken place Oh, I wondered with trepidation Who had won the race. I raced to the Council Chamber And there His Lordship stood, Mr. Moriarty, in a ponderous mood. He looked at me with prying eyes But yet with great intent 'Tis the Lord above that sent ya I was seeking a replacement. Now Sir you know that unto you Has been given quite a chore And I want you to know This is so much more Since the days of Baltimore. I felt my heart leap in my chest Why Baltimore -that's me! And with a jolt from my dream I awoke And faced reality. Submitted By: NULL
