Ballad of a Newfoundland Pony

Rock walls and waterfalls, fjords and the sea
fields, forests, peace - my pony Prince and me

My Prince, you're a descendant of the finest steeds
of ancient English Irish Scottish and Welsh breeds
You are intelligent, good-natured, loyal, true,
a very willing worker and full of fun too

Historic lines combined to form your noble race
of strong and sturdy stock that belongs in this place
My Newfoundland pony, you're as handsome as The Rock
I'm happy when I'm with you 'cause we often talk

Daybreak. I harness you, my Prince of Avalon
to hitch you to our single plough soon after dawn
From year to year we watch and learn each other's way
When you begin to pull I know you'll pull all day

My Prince, my handsome Prince, you stopped, please pull the plough
He looks around and whinnies, "It is your turn now."
I answer promptly with a quick flick of a rein,
a firm rap on the rump that will produce no pain

"I am your master, do as I say," I command
He answers, "Never, we are equal on the land."
"Prince, you say we are equal, but how can that be?
"Can a fine pony like you ever equal me?"

"Of course," he neighs, "we work side by side on the farm,
and each of us is gifted with the Newfoundland charm."
"My charming friend," I sigh, "please full the plough for me."
"A master and servant are never friends," says he.

That's brilliant, Prince, persuasive, it is some profound
Your splendid words of wisdom are extremely sound
In truth, you are my best friend, please let me help pull
My Prince of Avalon ploughs on - he's beautiful
