I was living in St. John’s, just moved there and bought my first car.  One warm sunny day my friend Sue and I went for a drive to try out my new car.  It was a very busy day with vehicles speeding past me on both sides as if it was the highway.  My heart sank as I looked ahead and saw a toddler wearing only a diaper in the middle of the speeding traffic that was swerving to avoid hitting the child.  I put on my emergency blinkers and came to a sudden stop not far from the child.  Several vehicles sped past me narrowly missed running over the child.  When I saw my chance, and it was only seconds to spare with more vehicles approaching, I opened my door , grabbed the child and threw him/her into my car.  Then I quickly jumped back into the car.  So thankful we both were inside the car I proceeded down Kenmount Road counting my lucky stars we weren’t  hit by any of the vehicles.  Finding a safe place to pull over I looked at the tiny tot, not knowing what to do next.  

I can’t recall if it was my idea or Sue’s, but we decided to go to the police station with the child.  As I started to explain to the police officer about the child he told us that he just got off the phone with a frantic mother whose baby went missing in the Kenmount road area.  We were very happy to hand the baby over to the policeman knowing the child would safely get home again.

This occurred around 1975 or 1976 and over the years I wondered about the child who would now be about 50 years old.  If anyone knows this story I would be interested in knowing where he/she is now and if they could contact the Downhome magazine just to make themselves known.
