Baby Bonus Check
"baby bonus check it was back in the fifties, when we used to get, what we always called our ""baby bonus"" check, oh, it wasn’t that much, my mother said, only five dollars for each little kid. i remember each month, a brown envelope came, and it was addressed in our mother’s name, then we’d look in the catalogue for something to get, for clothes and ""what nots"" with that little check. my mother would say as she made out her list, ""i think you need shoes, not a new dress."" and i remember getting mad, and throwing a fit. ‘cause, i couldn’t get, what i wanted to get. when the order was ready, we sent it away, with a post office order, the very next day. we waited and waited, for the package to come, i don’t remember, if it was two weeks or one. now, back in the fifties, it wasn’t so funny, five dollars per child, was a whole lot of money. and now that i’m older, i’ll never forget, all the things that we got, with that little check.."
