Here is a picture of my Aunt Evelyn Bailey (Hodder), which was taken at the Argentia Base in the early 1940s. She married American Ben Bailey - next to her with collar done up. Probably the others are American servicemen. Someone wrote Downhomer magazine, probably around 1997, looking for Evelyn Hodder, who he knew from his time at the Argentia Base in the early 1940s. I gave the magazine to my mother at the time and told her to tell Evelyn. I know it was in the old type Downhomer magazine. I think he was from Sue Falls, Dakota, USA. I don't know if he was one of the guys in the picture. Evelyn still lives in Pennsylvania, USA. She's 87 years old. Ben Bailey passed away over 10 years ago. Also, my father, Stephen Clarke, was the first barber in Marystown. I remember him cutting hair in the porch with a pair of hand clippers (Mom gave Jerome Walsh Museum in Little Bay, Marystown, a pair of hand clippers - Jerome used to give Dad fish when he came for haircuts). He built the barbershop on the house around 1966 and Uncle Almer (Mom's brother), who lived in Toronto at the time, sent him a barber chair. I remember coming home from St. John's on Pat Hollett's taxi in the late 1970s, and some old guy in the taxi told me that my father cut his hair while he was sitting on a tree stump in the lumber woods years ago - I think it was Howley. Hayward Hodder, who worked with me at Marystown Shipyard, said that he also cut people's hair in the lumber woods with a pair of hand clippers. (Note: Google "model shipbuilder, Hayward Hodder" to hear about building wooden schooners at Creston, near Marystown). My father died in 1993 - 77 years old. Mom died in 2005 - 88 years old. My father was also a carpenter and built houses in the Marystown area before becoming a barber. Dad would have to take a boat to Argentia, then a train to the west coast, because back then there were no roads. Also, my grandfather Hodder (Henry/Harry) was in the US navy on the coast guard ship Senica from 1913-1922. In the 1930s, he worked on the coast guard ship Shalamite, patrolling waters between Newfoundland and St. Pierre. He was also a horse doctor. Brother Les got the tools he used. (Brother Les has the family tree online.) P.S. Spoke with Evelyn today (July 21, 2011) and she said it was okay to publish the picture. And she said she did talk to the guy who was looking for her, and he has a sister living near her in Centerhall, OA, USA. She said she has his number and will call him; she's not sure if he is still alive. Evelyn still lives alone. She has two daughters living in the States.
