Every year at Christmas time, I always wrack my brain thinking of the perfect gift I can buy my mom. I can't buy her earrings because she doesn't have her ears pierced, bracelets and necklaces are not her thing, she has lots of clothes and certainly doesn't need any more dishes! So I had to make the annual call to my aunt, who always seems to have the perfect suggestions as to what my mom might like. This year, she suggested a Christmas scarf. Apparently, Mom had always wanted one, but could never seem to find them in the stores. I loved the idea, so off I go to the malls, thinking this would be an easy find. Well...I searched high and low, one store after the other, but to no avail. There were scarves of every kind, but no Christmas ones. I left the mall very disappointed, knowing that today would be my last chance to shop before I headed up to Newfoundland for Christmas. The next day I headed to the airport, and anxiously awaited my flight to Deer Lake. As I was strolling around the airport, I happened to spot two ladies who were both wearing beautiful silk Christmas scarves! Before giving it anther thought, I rushed up to them and asked where they had bought them. I was hoping they would say from a store in Halifax. My odds now of finding one had just increased! However, when they said they were both from Newfoundland, and had bought them at the Avalon Mall, my heart sunk. I wasn't going to be in St. John's over the holidays, so that wasn't an option either. I proceeded to tell them my story of how I had looked high and low for one for my mother for Christmas, and how disappointed I was that I couldn't find one anywhere. Without thinking twice, one of the ladies took off her scarf and placed it in my hands. She said, "Give this scarf to your mom and wish her a Merry Christmas!" I was speechless! I couldn't believe someone could be so kind and thoughtful to a total stranger. I thanked her immensely, and felt the Christmas spirit for the first time this season. On Christmas morning when my mom opened this gift, I told her the story. She cried as I was telling her about this lady and her act of kindness. She said she was truly an "angel in disguise." So if this angel is reading this story, I want to thank her again for this special gift, and for sharing the true meaning of the season with my family and I. It is a story Mom and I will share for years to come. I would love to know the angel's name, so I could express my gratitude to her again.
