In May 2026, Sandra travelled to Maxixe, Mozambique on a short-term mission trip with The Salvation Army.  Along with a team of fourteen from Canada, she completed renovations to dilapidated houses belonging to Salvation Army clergy living in that country.  She said that “Words cannot describe the experience of serving others in such a meaningful way.  Despite having so little, they had so much to share with us through new friendships, huge smiles and a deep appreciation for the blessings that they have.”  The very lengthy journey from Deer Lake, NL to Maxixe, MZ was made all the better with a copy of Downhome Magazine.

With its location on the Indian Ocean, the Mozambique’s economy is based chiefly on fishery—mostly crab, lobster, shrimp, tuna and marlin.  The country is a hidden gem for tourists; boasting 2500 kms of coastline with pristine white sand beaches.  The nation though remains one of the poorest and most underdeveloped countries in the world.
