An Answered Prayer Dear Ron, Please print this story in the Downhome magazine. It is true; I'll tell it as I remember it. It happened in Burnt Cove, renamed Newville now. Every spring, most conversation was about the seal hunt. One day my brother, about seven years old, said to Mom, "I wonder if I'd pray and ask God to send me a meal of seal, would He do it?" Mom said, "Yes, my son, kneel down by my knee and pray." So he prayed a short prayer, and said, "God, if you only send me a meal, I'll be happy." I don't think it came in meal-sized pieces, but anyhow, a couple of days later, our sister came down from Summerford, N.W. Island to visit us. She brought some seal meat in a Morse's tea can. His first answer came in that can. A few days later, he asked God to send some seals in on the ice pans; sure enough it wasn't long before he looked through the window and started to cry, "Oh, my," he said, "Uncle John has my seal on a rope. It's what I prayed for." Mom told him, maybe he would share with him, and that he needed seal meat too. He was overwhelmed about his loss. A few hours afterward, someone came in and said, "There's a pan of ice in the cove with about twenty or thirty seals on it." I truly believe in the faith of a child. His faith was stronger then than now! Everyone in the cove had meat that spring, whoever wanted some, except Mr. Efford. Ernest, to this day you can sure pick those bones.   Submitted By: NULL
