A poem written by my brother, Victor Burton, who left home (Port Nelson, B. Bay, Newfoundland) in 1940 to fight in the war.

An Airman's Soliloquy

(Written by Victor Burton of Port Nelson, who is on active service with the R.A.F. somewhere in England)

I am a Newfoundlander,
To Port Nelson I belong,
I volunteered to fight the war,
For I thought it would not be long.

I left home in 1940,
As happy as could be
Not thinking it would be so long
I had joined the Forestry.

A year and a half in the Forestry
Was far too long for me.
I thought I'd join the Navy,
But the Air Force had to be.

I joined up in September
Myself and William Wicks.
We both left camp together,
For our training of ten weeks.

And now we are two gunners
Our minds are on our work.
We long to see the Jerrys,
And bring them down like dirt.

Two years we spent in Scotland,
Before we started to roam.
But now I am in England,
And longing to go home.

And when this war is over
No more shall I want to roam.
I'll go back and get married
To the girl I left at home.

So nights we would go dancing,
to pass away the time,
But at last we became parted
It was a sad day of mine.

And now I have no more to say
At duty I must be.
