Abraham Lincoln And Rip Van Winkle!
Our late friend, Johnny Mike from Trepassey, loved to confuse Rip Van Winkle with Abraham Lincoln. He would meld the two names together and come up with a brilliant mashup: “Abraham Winkle.”
Because my uncles were Kennedys, he always called me “Kennedy.”
“Who are you, Kennedy?” he’d say. “Abraham Winkle—the fella who slept for twenty years!”
He joked like that because I had a habit of passing out at parties. Back home, the bars never threw me out for sleeping, though that definitely happened to me later on in Ontario.
