A Whale of a Tale

That is me with a beluga. July 2003. Matt took about a full roll of pics when we encountered him/her. But this is the best pic we think. We were out in my dad's boat taking a spin up Goshen's Arm, which is a part of Herring Neck. All of a sudden we saw something in the water. At first we thought it was a seal. It came straight for us. It took a while for us to figure out what it was, and then it took us a while for us to beliveve what we were seeing. Anyway he came right up to the boat. Dad turned off his motor. He was not at all shy. We spent about a hour and a half with him, petting and touching him. He also spent time rubbing himself on the boat and showing off for us. We noticed he was full of scars. When we attempted to leave we soon figured out why. As soon as dad turned on the motor to leave he went straight for it. Dad turned off the motor again in fear of hurting him. Dad made several attempts to start the motor and each time he would go straight for the motor blades. We had to row for a while to a shallow part of the bay where he could not get close to the boat and start the motor. We then made an atempt to get away, but when we looked next to the boat there he was again. We made several attempts to do this before we were successful in getting home. The next day several other people saw the beluga, right next to where dad keeps his boat. Not sure if that was councidence or not.   Submitted By: NULL
