Moose hunting is no strange ordeal for 9-year-old Victoria Gillingham of Clarke's Head, Gander Bay, who went on her first hunting trip at the age of four months.
On October 5th, Victoria, with her parents Randy & Debbie Gillingham, set out on another kill. Everyone said moose was scarce in Area Seventeen. Gill's Pond was their first stop; within minutes, Victoria saw a bull on the other side of the pond. The moose disappeared before Debbie, the license holder, could get within firing distance. While waiting to see if the moose would appear again, Victoria saw two moose bones on the ground. She immediately picked them up and began knocking them together; it being rutting season, the moose must have followed the noise. After a half-hour wait, Victoria's dad said it was pointless to wait, the moose was gone. Lo and behold, Victoria spied the moose again. The animal came within five hundred yards of the hunter. Victoria's mom waded in water up to her waist; the first shot she missed, but the second one she was dead on.
