A Tribute to Larry Smith (A Hero)
A poem written by my son, as a tribute to a man, a friend of the family, who is like a grandfather to my son. My son is 11 years old.
A Tribute to Larry Smith
(A Hero)
The wrinkled old man lay his cane across the chair,
And told us just to sit on the floor anywhere,
His eyes grew dim and his face so stern,
And in his heart this story surely did burn.
It was long ago and oh so far away,
That his friends and family fought day after day,
To bring an end to this terrible war,
We wondered what they were fighting for.
He repeated his words time and time again,
Of what was in store for all our men,
The cold, the hunger and the strife of the battle,
He said our people were treated less than cattle.
They fought, they suffered but they truly endured,
Many of them died and many never to be cured,
Many of them returned to tell the gruesome tale,
Just as this Veteran of Five Purple Hearts without fail.
We sat in total amazement at this hero's feet,
So inspirational, so full of knowledge, no one could beat,
Our greatest respect we certainly should show,
Because in Flanders Field poppies grow row on row.
