A Short Railway Legacy I

On June 20, 1988 it became official that the island's railway would cease operations as of September 1, 1988. Today all the railway tracks have been removed and the rail bed is being converted into part of the Trans Canada trailway.
George Short, retired railway engineer, came from a family of railroaders and talks of days when he didn't see an automobile in his community but saw at least a few speeders going by on the tracks. George's hobby is restoring old speeders and one that he has restored belonged to his father, a section foreman who before Confederation had to purchase his own speeder. He has five speeders in his shed at Cape Ray and a hand trolley he has built himself. At times he was lucky enough to still get parts from the manufacturing companies but every now and then he had to make the parts himself. A few years ago he decided to run some rail around his property in Cape Rayand can be seen quite often talking to the community children and taking them for a ride on his speeders.   Submitted By: NULL
