A Newfoundlander Abroad
I want to be again in Newfoundland,
I'd like just once to sniff the air in zones,
Where caplins rot upon potato beds, or sand,
Of putrefying entrails and cods' bones.
One hopeful look I want to retake
Across the shining waters of Fortune Bay.
Oh, what a sight those hills and islands make,
When glowing in the light of fading day.
I long again to walk the swamps and greens,
Where partridgeberries and bakeapples grew.
Only one from her youth could value those means,
Such glory and nostalgia elsewhere I never knew.
To me Newfoundland was Paradise with heights sublime,
With people of talent, ambition and intellect.
May we forever pursue that role in time,
With optimism, love and virtue to not forget.
