In the mid-late 1980’s, I was an exploration geologist working on a property on the southwest coast of the Island, just north of the Hope Brook Mine, along the Cinq Cerf River. This was a helicopter supported operation and our only form of communication with the outside world was via a radio phone. Because our camp was set up in the river valley where we could not get any reception, I had to set up our radio on top of the ridge above the valley.  When I went up the hill to set up the radio, I noticed this apparently crashed helicopter, lying in its side on the ridge. I was curious about how got there, but more importantly, this was an ideal place to set up my radio, in the lee of the helicopter shell. It served me well during my time on the project, as fall quickly turned to winter down there, and I was grateful for the protection that this relic offered from the wind and the snow as I made my regular calls for supplies and to communicate with our office. The trek up to this site once winter set in was an adventure in itself through the knee to waist deep snow.

I have often wondered about the circumstances that led to the crash of this helicopter and how it ended up in this location, and what of the crew and any possible passengers.

I’m wondering if any of your readers might be able to shine some light on this incident, and finally satisfy my curiosity.
