A.J. Lowe with his Canadian Black Bear Kill.
As of late the Black Bear population has reached major proportions in the Trinity Bay area and on Random Island especially. Two elderly women are feeling threatened, one shot two bears and one awoke to find one sleeping on her woodpile. The landfill sites seem to be the attraction for them. My husband, now 62, has been hunting since he was a boy and never ever had any reason to kill a Black Bear. But this July, 2007 he did use it as the Bears are becoming unmanageable. It is a massive bear, weighing almost 500 lbs. It will be made into a gorgeous Canadian Black Bear Rug in due time. It should be a very special addition to our cabin. Although I am not a great advocate of hunting, when a black bear walks into someone's backyard and has their pet dog for dinner, I think man has to intervene before children are hurt.
