A Hoot (Holy October Owl Tale)

A Hoot (Holy October Owl Tale)

I remember October of two thousand fourteen,
just 2 weeks away until Halloween.

But the people of Fortune heard sounds rarely heard,
from the United Church steeple out of a seldom seen bird.

Atop the church steeple was some kind of owl.
The Fortune people didn't often see this kind of fowl.

The steeple's cross was sometimes used as its perch.
Why not a pine tree, a maple or birch?

It let out a hooting noise when the sun went down.
Did it call other owls flying around town?

Was there an eerie reason why the owl came here?
Maybe a random occurrence, nothing to fear.

But why perch on a church so near All Hallows Eve?
Did it have a trick up its feathery sleeve?

I thought it wanted to give trick-or-treaters a scare,
to grab their candy bags when it dove through the air.

Perhaps it prayed for a place to call home,
to see if divine powers could show it where to roam.

Perhaps my imagination was running amok,
and the owl&'s appearance was just Halloween luck.

You would've needed binoculars to see it up that high,
but no flash photography, for it may have taken to the sky.

It soon spread its wings and flew out of sight.
Will it return? I don't know, but for now I say Good night.   Submitted By: Jeffrey Elford
