A Fond Memory of Mr.Bill Morrey.
Back in 1975, when I was drumming with the Trepassey Band, we’d sometimes play the Legion on a Saturday night. The place would be warm with chatter, beer glasses clinking, and that familiar hum of a Newfoundland crowd settling in for a good time.
Every now and then, Mister Bill Morrey would step up to the mic. His wife would take her place at the piano, hands poised like she’d been waiting all night for this moment. And then Bill would sing Oh Danny Boy — not loudly, not showy, but with that steady, heartfelt voice that could quiet a room in seconds. You could feel the whole Legion listening.
A bit about Mister Bill:
William (Bill) M. Morrey of Ferryland, Newfoundland, was a World War II veteran. He enlisted in 1940 after resigning from the Newfoundland Constabulary, and sailed overseas with the first draft aboard the Duchess of Richmond. He served until February 1946, leaving the British Army with the rank of Sergeant.
He came from a line of strong stock — his father, Howard Morrey, survived the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel in the First World War. Bill himself was the last to run the family fishing business in Ferryland, carrying on a tradition older than most of the outports themselves.
So when he stood there in the Legion, singing Oh Danny Boy with his wife at the piano, it wasn’t just a song. It was a lifetime of service, family, and Newfoundland history wrapped up in one quiet, powerful moment.
