A community helped give a Christmas
I am writing this letter to say thank you once again to the folks of the most amazing place on earth, Newfoundland. I was born in Newfoundland and there until 2001, then as many youngsters do, I moved to Ontario. I still live in Ontario and try to get home for a visit a couple of times a year.
I have great memories of growing up in my hometown of Grand Falls - Windsor and daydream daily about moving back home. Nonetheless, here I am in Hamilton, Ontario.
A few months ago, my mother (Emily King) who is very involved in the community / church felt as if it was time for her to step aside from some of those rolls and she felt called in a different direction this is where my letter comes in.
I have been involved in helping the homeless / less fortunate folks for quite some time, so this year, for Christmas, I suggested we (as a family) forego giving each other gifts and give things (and our time) to the inner-city population of Hamilton. My mother immediately jumped on board with this and took her thoughts to her circle of friends and her church, Windsor Pentecostal Tabernacle.
I still cannot believe the utter outpouring of generosity from these folks. Many who probably could barely afford to give their own families a Christmas, donated money, gift-cards, chocolate bars, candy canes, and in all, approximately $2400 worth of Newfoundland-made knitted goods. I guess I shouldn't have been as surprised as I know the culture and the type of givers Newfs tend to be, but I was completely overwhelmed. Mom and dad gathered all these things, shipped a couple of huge boxes prior to them arriving in Hamilton for Christmas, and packed the rest in a suitcase for the flight.
The photo attached shows my mother beside some of the things donated.
We set a few things aside for a small number of families that I knew personally and we knew we wanted to help, but then on Christmas Eve, we drove to the inner-city of Hamilton, and areas where people live outdoors, or spend time in shelters, and handed out these things. People were so grateful. We told them we were giving on behalf of families from Newfoundland; there were smiles all around!
So, thank you to my mother, Emily King, my father Bob King, and all the people of Grand Falls - Windsor and Windsor Pentecostal church who helped give SO many people a warmer Christmas this year; in more ways than one.
Amy (King) White
Submitted By: Amy (King) White
