"being one of the pioneer families of carol lake (labrador city)and straight from montreal, never having met newfoundlanders before, nor knowing any of their culture, as it was only in the early 60's my mother went to introduce herself to a new family across the street. the woman had 9 children, i believe, and this impressed mom. however, while chatting, this lady continued cooking dinner. when mom returned she immediately- exclaimed to dad: ""oh, ed...do we have any spare pots or pans to give that poor woman across the street with all those kids?"" dad asked why? replies mom, ""because she only has one large pot for everything. she put in all her vegetables in the same pot..but then i watched as she placed her roast in the same pot too!"" needless to say, we had never heard of or seen salt-meat before."
