On October 16, 2017 my mother Lila Hounsell (Barnes) celebrated her 105th birthday. Mom was born in Champneys West Trinity Bay one of eleven children. As a young girl, to obtain work, she moved to St. Johns as a domestic and then to New Jersey where four brothers had gone. Upon returning to Newfoundland and meeting my father they lived in St. Johns and later to Toronto where growing up I always heard Newfoundland referred to as down home. Upon retirement my parents had a house built in Port Rexton Trinity Bay and they moved &quot;home&quot;. <br /> In later years they moved back to Ontario to live near me and my family. Last year she moved to a retirement home in Whitby On. She still has a good memory and is able to walk (with the help of a walker) to and from the dining room. Mom still enjoys a game of cards and continues to refer to Newfoundland as down home which she keeps connected to through your magazine. <br /> Every month when the Downhome magazine arrives she reads it from cover to cover and upon completion gives it to me after which I return it to the retirement home where it is quickly taken by another resident. <br /> Here is a picture of mom taken at a birthday gathering the home held for her.   Submitted By: NULL
