Newfoundland Boiled Dinner with Dough Boys
1 cup split peas
6 carrots
6 potatoes
1 medium turnip
1 head cabbage
Dough Boys Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups flour
4 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
milk
Cut salt beef in 2-inch pieces and soak in cold water overnight. Tie peas in a cloth bag and soak also. Drain off water. Bring to a boil and cook slowly for 3 hours until tender. Clean vegetables. Add turnip, potatoes and carrots 1/2 hour before serving dinner. Add cabbage during the last 15 minutes. Do not over cool. Turn peas pudding out into a bowl and mash with butter and pepper.
Dough Boy Directions:
Blend in the flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in the milk until mixture is moistened. Shape mixture into small balls and drop into liquid with the meat and vegetables of the boiled dinner (above). Cover pot tightly and cook for 15 minutes. Do not lift cover during cooking.
