Mulled Wine

1 (750 ml) bottle dry red wine
1 cup yellow sugar
Zest of 1 orange
Zest and juice of 1 lemon
3/4 cup orange juice
2 star anise
1 cinnamon stick, cracked in half
1 paper-thin slice fresh ginger
1 tsp nutmeg
6 cloves

In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat all ingredients (except the wine) over high heat. Once the mixture begins to boil, reduce the heat to medium and cook until it starts to become syrupy. Whisk in the wine and heat through - but do not boil or the alcohol will evaporate. Strain and serve hot with thin slices of citrus or apple. Yield: 4-6 servings
