French Onion Soup

6 beef cubes
6 cups hot water
5 cups onions, thinly sliced
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp sugar
1 tbsp flour
1/2 tsp salt

Dissolve beef cubes in 6 cups of hot water. Saute onion in butter or margarine until golden. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, sugar and flour; add beef cube mixture. Cover and simmer for 3-4 hours. Serve in bowls topped with croutons and parmesan cheese. This soup is best cooked in a slow cooker or crock pot for about 6 or 7 hours.
