We always did know how to laugh at ourselves. On a recent trip back home to Trepassey, I ran into three old friends outside the grocery store. We hadn’t crossed paths in years, but despite being seniors now, we instantly resorted right back to our school days.

One of them asked me, “Who did you go to school with?”

“Well,” I answered, “I went to school with a lot of people… mostly because I failed four times.”

Not to be outdone, one of the b’ys replied, “My brother spent four years in Grade Three. What genius would hold a youngster back four times, and what was her goal? Every single year when he went to the nursing station for his BCG scratches, the nurse would ask him if he was still in the same grade! I think she finally took pity and helped him pass just to break the cycle.”
