R.C Church In Trepassey NL.
While Strolling through the empty Church Yard on a recent visit to Trepassey.
My mind wandered back about fifty years on Saturday Evenings when
Hundreds of Bright Coloured Cars and Pickups would be Parked for The Saturday Evening Mass.
It came down from The Bishop that Saturday Evening Mass could be a Substitute for a Sunday Morning Service.
Giving the People a Full Day of Rest and Reprieve on Sunday.
Most people learned to Drive out of High School. But a few such as my Dad and his friend Matty waited until they could afford to Pay Cash for a Shiny Car.My Dad and Matty were both in their Sixties when they learned to Drive.Father liked to arrive first in the Church Yard and always waited until everybody left to go home.Matty did not like to Turn left against the Traffic. He already drove four miles from Low Point. So he drove another two miles to the Lower Coast turned around on the Green Hill and Entered the Church Yard from the Right.
Our family always sat on the Right side Centre of the Church. In the Old Church families had names on Pews.I think they Chose a Pew and Stuck with it in the New Church.
I remember My First Communion .We were served a Full Hot Breakfast of Bacon Eggs and Toast and The parents helped cut it up for us.I was so proud in my New Suit and after Service I went to visit with friends and Neighbours.I got a few fifty Cent pieces that Day.You remember fifty Cent Coins?
Then a few years on we received Confirmation. We were given the option of taken a third name.I kept my two first names.Easier to put on paper.
The Priest was quick with Mass.Probably about forty minutes.Short Sermon of about ten minutes and he had two Male Teachers who helped with Communion.A lot of Weddings and Funeral Masses over the Years.I had a couple of friends who loved to go watch people get married.
I used to do a Reading occassionally and sometimes a friend would ask me to read at their Wedding Service. Most folks attended every week and of course the CNE people we called them. The ones who showed up at Christmas and Easter and helped extend the long line up for Confession.
The Parish Priest there now is Father Peter Golden and he recently turned 90 and Judy Brazil really does a great deal in making sure the Church runs smoothly.Although the faithful numbers are much smaller. The Church is still a Strong part of the Community.Golden Hall under The Church stays busy with functions and many young people come back home to get married and to have a Reception in the Hall. The Men had The Knight’s Of Columbus and Women had The Women’s Institue.Sunday Night Bingo’s and Dances and the Odd Card Game.Always a St Patrick’s Day Concert.I am sure I may have forgotten a few things. This was only meant to be a Caption to go with the Photo.I have to go now as the Dogs are preparing a leash for Me.Thanks for the Visit.
