The Old Convent and School and (R.C) Church In Trepassey
You Are Not Saucy!
Oh the joys of growing up in a small Newfoundland Outport
where our Teachers knew our families personally and some
even intimately.
Ms.Stella was our Vice Principal.Born and Bred in Trepassey.
She was getting on in years.A short Woman. But firm when She
wanted to be.Never see her use a Strap.
I heard in her younger days she taught in Biscay Bay which was four miles from
Trepassey and Ms.Stella, commuted back and forth on a Bicycle on a PotHole
Dirt Road in Rain,Drizzle and Fog.I can see her now coasting out over Half Way Hill on a Black Raleigh Bike wearing a Blue dress and Hush Puppy Loafers.
On the Odd occasion if I acted up and gave a sarcastic answer to a Question
being a Class Clown.Ms Stella would take me into the Hallway leading into the Old Convent. She liked to use her fingers to bring home a Point.
“Now,Number One on her Pinky Finger “and never making it to Number Two.
“You are not Saucy! Then came the list of Uncles of mine who were not saucy.”
So,I can’t be Saucy.
In hindsight She was right. You can tell a lot about Children through family History.I seemed to be one that she would engage as She was passing through
our Class to head into wherever Teachers and Nuns went to be Human again.
Probably a quick Biscuit and a Tea and water The Flowers and back on Parade.
Now,Look it here. How can you benefit from a You are not Saucy( Ted Talk )
before Ted Talks You may ask Yourself.
Not sure I know the answer.Only it has stuck with me for sixty years.
If you want to make an impression on a ten year old.Start by saying
You are not Saucy!
