Roy’s Party Bus For Kids
This is a true story that Originated in Trepassey in 1963.
Told from the Eyes of a Six Year Old. Sixty three Years Later. It is Mid Summer and The Garden Party is in Full Swing.Mother gives me a 50 Cent piece to go have some funwith my Older Sisters as Chaperone.( Free Babysitter)We were about to leave when we heard Young RoyDeveraux who was sitting behind the Wheel of hisUncle Richard’s School Bus and was offering to take usand anybody else who wanted a ride around the Harbourto see the New Playground on Daniel’s Point.Looking back I believe that is where I caught the Bug for Travel.Be it Planes,Trains or automobiles and BoatsI end up taking them all.But that would come later. It was the Bus Ride that impressed me.Then I heard someone say.”No Melvin, those are not Sheep they are Cows Grazing inThe Grassy Bank area.Cattle grazing in Sutton’s Laneare some of the Sights we drove by on our destination around the Harbour.About a four Mile Journey to Daniel’s Point.First time yours truly has been up past the Church Yard in our lovely Town.At that time Daniel’s Point was the only Place in trepassey that had a PlayGround.Swings,Slides,Waddy Boards. We call them Merry Go Rounds. Not sure of the Proper name.I don’t recall much about the Play Ground only it was exciting to see it and be there.I recall a nice mixture of Adults,Teens and kids on the Bus and Roy was so Coolfor taking us.Now onto a little about Roy.I used to see Roy frequently visiting Uncle Vince Store over the Years as they swapped jokes.Roy had his own Auto Body Shop and would test drive Customers Cars to see how they ran and he always ended up stopping in with a Chat with Vince. My Late Uncle Gus liked to visit the Store in the Evenings and Roy would have him rolling on the floor laughing.I had a set of Drums that were rusting on me because I was storing them in damp unheated Spaces.Roy painted them for me for twenty Bucks.Ever seen drums with Car Paint? A site to behold.I only learned recently through Roy’s sister Sylvia that we are distant CousinsMy Great GrandFather O’Neil and Roy’s Great Grandmother were Brother and Sister. So they have a connection to the Old House in The Dock.I Would also like to mention Roy and his wife Marie are now living in an assisted living Retirement Home where they are properly cared for.Back to the Fun Bus Ride.We did not have any Guides pointing out names of Places such as Carey’s Property in North East or Atlantic Salmon jumping as we crossed North east Bridge or anything about Low Point and a few Kennedy Families lived there, some of Mom’s Cousin’s to be sure.I don’t recall ever asking to go back to the Playground or any more free Bus Rides on weekends. When raised without a family Vehicle it puts limitations on rides of any sort.I always wanted to see what was over the next Hill and you know we had our share of Hills.Six years later I got my first Bicycle so I got to see over a lot of Hills.I wonder how much a six year can actually remember.Let’s Recap: Roy the Driver,Mixture of Adults,Teens and Kids.A free Ride.Animals in Meadows.Horses,Sheep,Cows,Corcoran’s Bull. That is about it then.Don’t recall connecting with any kids. Thanks for joining me as a six year Old on Roy’s Party Bus for Kids.
