I have been receiving the Downhome for years and when I read the article Hung Out to Dry in the August 2025 edition it reminded me of when I was young, my mother would use the clothesline for another purpose.

It was 1950 and I was 10 years old, my oldest brother was in the Korean War. We lived in Corner Brook on Humber Road and we had no phone. He as gone for two years and would write my mother often. My sister lived below us and whenever mom received a letter she would put a large red scarf on the clothesline to let my sister know we had a letter and she would come up and read it.
