Nan Marie’s Homemade Bread
Nans Homemade Bread Nestled away in the scenic town of Hillview Trinity Bay stands a white split level home with the greenest lawn you have ever seen, and to the right of that lawn is a garden that harvests the most abundant and delicious potatoes on the island. (personal opinion but I most likely fact) But that’s not what Nan Marie is known for. Just walking up the driveway you can smell it. That aroma of freshly baked golden goodness. “NAN GOT BREAD BAKED”! It seeps into your soul like a warm loving hug. As you open the door you are overcome with a loving embrace not only from Nan but the warm welcoming of the freshly baked homemade bread sitting out on the counter. Those shiny golden loafs are as good as any block of Yukon gold. With a devilish grin I ask “Can I have a slice now”? And her response as always “Yes, my love, you grab the molasses and I’ll put the kettle on” As we sit with a slice of bread each, Nan with her cup of tea and me with my coffee I can’t help but wonder how in the world she makes bread taste so darn good. As we both sit enjoying sipping our tea & coffee nan says “Couple pans a bread der on da counter fer ya” as she motions to the kitchen with her head. As a child I would help Nan making bread, mixing the flour and yeast, kneading dough, greasing the pans, and rolling the dough into balls. She has such a technique and natural skill, to this day I still cannot do it right. All the practice in the world and my bread comes nowhere near as good, moist, fluffy and tasty as Nans. (although my sisters’ bread is getting close) Like an artist mastering their craft Nan Marie is a master of homemade bread. To this day watching her withered hands kneading and rolling the dough so effortlessly is like watching music flow. Call it years of experience, muscle memory or practice but to watch a woman in her mid 80’s making bread is truly a sight to behold.
