At the outset, my name is Al (Albert) Butt, and I was born on 3 December, 1936 to a fishing family and was often referred to as a “Christmas Baby” and so any birthday gifts were held until Christmas. In those days, birthday and Christmas gifts were wall homemade by my mom and consisted on knitted mitts, scarves, socks, tuques, etc. My parents were not blessed financially, but were blessed with love, kindness, respect and dedication for each other and those principles were passed down to all their children and still apply to those still living today. In all my years in the workforce, I did not meet anyone who could save, plan and project the future like my parents. They did all the planning for a large family and therefore, we were all ok during lean and profitable years in the fishing business. We were very fortunate to have such hard-working parents hence we were well taken care of and never had to rely on any assistance. Life was no easy for them because we did not have any modern facilities as we all have today. It has been some 67 years since I left my home in Carbonear. In May of 1957, I moved to Gander working in communications with the Federal Department of Transport, then St. John’s in October 1959 working for the Federal Department of Forestry, and then in April of 1964, to Ottawa to start training for the RCMP. During my years in the RCMP, I was very fortunate to have done some work in all provinces including the territories. 2022 Come Home Year Looking back during those early years and after spending a month in and around Carbonear in 2022, I realized how I missed out by not having access to what they have today to include a swimming pool, a recreation complex, a tennis court, a baseball diamond, a ball hockey rink, track and field, soccer or basketball court, community playground, community boardwalk, walking and hiking trails, library, hospital, Canadian Tire, Island Charter Tours, museum, horseback riding and about thirty modern stores in Trinity Community Square. No wonder then why Carbonear is called the “Hub of Conception Bay”. In addition, I also missed not being around Carbonear to congratulate family members who because of two awesome parents, became very successful on their respective professions like Mayor, postmaster, supermarket owner, plumbing business, motel owner, government, wholesale, carpenter, etc. I also missed other things like the end of rail service, the old Bond Theatre and my old elementary school both destroyed by fire, the start of the Compass newspaper, and the closure of Davis Elementary School. In addition to all the above, what I miss the most in homemade bread, Newfoundland traditional dinners, especially Jiggs dinner, fresh codfish, fresh salmon, lobster, shrimp crab, capelin and trout. Needless to say, however, that when I returned to Ottawa, care packages were in the 100-pound range. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and so the photos will illustrate what 2022 Come Home Year really meant to me.
