The Hope Chest
Did you have one when you were a lass
Most young maids in Newfoundland did, but that's all in the past
In it were blankets, towels, face cloths and such
Some pots and pans, but of that not too much
More like kitchen accessories, can openers, and special cutlery
Homemade and knitted, crocheted items were of plenty
These treasures were kept safe in a wooden monogrammed chest
In the hopes of a girl finding a good husband, and being at her best
But times have changed and hope chests are of no more
It's a whole new generation, and the old tradition is gone wherefore
