When John Cabot set sail in 1497
Little did he realize, what a gift he had been given
He gazed in wonder at this New Found Land
After sailing for many a day and night
He shouted "Bonavista"
Which means "Oh, Pretty Sight."
Some folks arrived from England
From Ireland and Scotland too.
In this brave new world they settled
To make their dreams come true.
The British Empire was founded here in 1583
When Sir Humphrey Gilbert came
To reclaim New Found Land for the Queen.
The first vaccination for Smallpox was given here.
The first Court of Law was held.
The first transatlantic cable was laid.
The first transatlantic flight originated.
We get to see the sunrise first.
The stars shine brighter here.
The Northern lights are simply grand.
I think God must have favoured Newfoundland.
We have pretty towns with romantic names
Such as Hearts Desire, Hearts Content and Hearts Delight,
Sleepy Cove and Paradise, and a place called Lushes Bight.
Or, you may visit Joe Batts Arm, Rattling Brook or Fogo,
Where some friendly folks may invite you in
for Fish and Brewis before you go.
Sometimes when I'm lonely, feel I've lost my way,
I take a stroll down memory lane
to Comfort Cove, in Notre Dame Bay.
Sometimes we're known as "Newfies"
Sometimes we're Newfonese.
But that's okay, I'm very proud to be known as one of these.
