Tales From Away-Music And Friends~
Music and friends, it's so good to bring together music and friends
Side by side no one can break them
When we take the time to make them
Nothing else can take the place of music and friends

Happy belated Tibb's Eve!

The ironic thing about Tibb's eve is that I had never heard of it until after a few years I came to Toronto. And probably coming from a small remote community could have played a part in that-but I think it's more of 'I just wasn't in the know.' Wikipedia which is my 'go to' for all things says this about Tibb's Eve:

Tibb's Eve, also known as Tipp's Eve, Tip's Eve or Tipsy Eve is a celebration held on December 23 originating on the south coast of Newfoundland. The wild festivity started sometime around the mid-20th century as the first night during Advent when it was appropriate to have a drink. Advent was a sober, religious time of year and traditionally people would not drink alcohol until Christmas Day at the earliest. Tibb's Eve emerged as an excuse to imbibe two days earlier.

What a great evening with family and friends, playing lovely songs on the guitar. Two of my favorite Newfoundland songs for sure: Simani's 'Music and Friends', and 'Grey Foggy Day.' I could stay all night and listen to more and more songs.

The words from both songs resonate with me but the start of 'Grey Foggy Day' touches me beyond words-I couldn't have said it better myself.

It's been some years ago
Since I left from my island
To go to the mainland
Like the old folks would say
As I walked up the gangway
And I stood on the starboard
And I gazed on the harbor
On a 'Grey Foggy Day'

I'm sure Newfoundlanders all around this big old world can resonate and reminisce through these words and songs. They touch our hearts and minds and bring us all together as a proud culture. As I mentioned in my 'Tales From Away Don't Touch That Dial' blog; at the same moment in different time zones all over the world, Newfoundlanders all over are tuning in to 'The Cabin Party.'

We were brought up with music and we were all brought up as friends, "it's so good bring together music and friends."

Take care (and enjoy music with your friends) and all the best~Celeste

www.talesfromaway.com Submitted By: Alicia "Celeste" Loughrey
