Lighthouses Live On in Coffee Cove

Lighthouses Live On in Coffee Cove

With the future of NL Lighthouses in jeopardy, I thought Newfoundlanders would like to know that the idea of the lighthouse is still very much alive in Coffee Cove, NL, population 18 (19 if you include our Newfoundland dog, Nicky). Our property here attracts hundreds of photographers and artists year round and it has been featured in the NL Herald and was chosen for the 2011 Herald calendar. A local artist, Doug Downey (impressionist knife painter) was here last week for the day doing a canvas of our property, specifically of the Baker House (130 year-old salt box house) and the old Cape Islander boat on the beach. My husband and I decided to build a lighthouse at the highest point on the property. It's a three-storey lighthouse, with an added-on kitchen at the back, which was how many lighthouses were set up years back so the keepers could live on site. When the building first got underway it created a lot of attention. The community came together to stand the walls (kinda like an old fashioned barn raising). The work on the lighthouse continues and we are scheduled for completion for July 1st this year. The bottom floor of the lighthouse tower is the living room with a staircase up to a loft bedroom where there is a pull-down staircase that takes you up to the tower, which is octagon-shaped with all glass panels - and the view out into Little Bay Arm is amazing. Now tourists are lining up to be the first to stay in the Lighthouse Cabin.

We share our love of this place with visitors from all over and our goal is to ensure that all our guests get a true taste of Newfoundland culture and hospitality. If you have questions or would like more pictures please let me know. Thanks for listening. P.S. The local artist referred to above has approached us about offering customized artist retreats here in Coffee Cove, because of the inspirational setting provided here. Attached is a pic of the lighthouse as it stands now.   Submitted By: Nola Snyder
