I'm enclosing a speech that was presented by Carla Brown of Rocky Rapids Alberta. Her parents are originally from Joe Batt's Arm, NL and have been living in Alberta for 12 years now . Carla as spent summers visiting Newfoundland and when asked to write a speech in School, she wanted to write about Newfoundland and her experience's there. She was judged by the town's people, encluding An RCMP, teachers, and other community leaders. I am pleased to say she got second place. With approx 50 students participating. I am enclosing her speech and a photo of her holding her certificate.

Newfoundland

Good Morning Fellow Classmates and Teachers. It's the people that make a visit to Newfoundland an experience unlike any other. There are few places in the world where you'll find such kindness and honesty. Newfoundlanders are a down-to-earth people. Newfoundland is full of history, scenic beauty, wildlife and friendly people. A holiday here promises excitement and experiences that simply can't be found anywhere else.

Newfoundland is Canada's newest province and Britain's oldest colony. It's the most eastern province of Canada. The capital of Newfoundland is St. John's, which is the oldest city in North America. The population of Newfoundland is approximately 5 hundred thousand people.

Newfoundland's climate can best be described as moderate. The winters in Newfoundland is very cold and summers is mild, though with a high rate of precipitation. St. John's, Newfoundland, the capital is the foggiest and wettest city in Canada. Waterproof clothing is worn most of the year.

Newfoundland's economy has been dominated by the fishing industry, but the cod fishery as declined, and now the fishery is mainly shrimp, crab, and flounder. There is also some forestry, mining, manufacturing, and oil. Although, the economy of Newfoundland has expanded, it still as the lowest income of any Canadian province. Therefore, Newfoundlanders have to move to other provinces for work.

There are so many ways to enjoy a visit to Newfoundland. The wildlife and nature is beautiful. The icebergs that you see are amazing. The ocean breeze is breath taking. Also, go for a boat ride and watch the whales. I mostly enjoyed the festivals in the summers where locals from the communities would sing and they would have good homemade traditional Newfoundland food, example toutans which is fried dough with molasses or fish and brewis which is hard tack with cod fish - DELICIOUS!

I also enjoyed taking strolls behind my grandparents house to pick big juicy blue berries and bringing them back for my Grandma to make her YUMMY blue berry pancakes.

Newfoundland is a great place to visit. The people make all the difference. They still keep alive the old manners and customs of their ancestors, who came from England and Ireland in the 17 and 18 hundreds. They often speak the old language of their forefathers. The doors are rarely locked in Newfoundland. Everyone is welcomed to come in and have a cup of tea and share a story, a song, or a joke. The people can be really funny. The next time your thinking about going on a vacation, consider Newfoundland!
