My father enjoys reading the Downhome magazine.<br /> I would like to surprise my mother and father with a greeting in the December issue.<br /> Stan and Elsie Miller were married on 31 Dec 1947 in Toronto. Stan left Laurenceton, NDB three and a half years earlier as a sixteen year old emigrant, looking to make a living and find a job. Stan left home in a convoy in the summer of 1944, under a black out looking to avoid any U-boats during the crossing.<br /> Arriving in Toronto, he found war work, welding fuel tanks for Lancaster bombers, helping to support the war effort. He also worked evenings and weekends as an usher in a local theatre. With a meagre education due to working at Weisman's Head as a water boy in 42 and general labourer in 43 after the death of his father in 1940. Stan found time to go to night school to further his education and with grit and determination forge a life for his family.<br /> Stan worked for forty-four years for General Electric, retired and then started his own electrical contractor business. In his spare time he managed to raise a family of three children, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren with two more due in February.
