The Little Church on the Hill

The Little Church on the Hill

For over 50 years my Mother-in-law, Loretta Curtis, played the organ for both the Anglican and United churches in Hatchet Cove, a small community nestled between Hillview and St. Jones Within, on the East Coast of Newfoundland. Many years ago there were two separate churches, one for the Anglican congregation and one for the United church congregation. With old, out of date buildings it was decided to build a new more modern church which would serve both the United and Anglican congregations. Loretta played the organ for both religions. Years later Loretta asked David Curtis, her brother-in-law, who was a very skilled carpenter, to build her a replica of the old United Church that she grew up with and played the organ in. After many months he presented her with the replica which was almost an identical match. It was complete with pews, alter, lanterns, and pot belly stove. Her and husband Freeman displayed the replica, with pride, on their front lawn. Sadly she passed away in 2008 and Freeman in 2011. After hers and Freeman's passing we brought the Church home to Nova Scotia and proudly displayed it in memory of them. In 2019 we did some painting and repair of the Church. Dave, who sadly passed away October 2019, did an awesome job right down to the potbelly stove. In Memory, Loretta and Freeman Curtis and Dave and Dorothy Curtis   Submitted By: Doris Curtis
