Hey Downhome staff! I've been enjoying your magazine for some time now and I thought you might be interested in seeing this. This is my "Memories of Newfoundland" quilt. I was born and raised in Gander NL, and spent many summers as a child in Burnside, Bonavista Bay, where both sets of my grandparents lived. Each picture in this quilt is a cherished memory for me, from the old stove with the fresh bread from the oven to my grandfathers putt putt boat, moored off out in the bay. As I worked on this quilt, I spent many hours reminiscing of my childhood and all the sights, sounds and smells associated with each scene. My grandparents are long gone as well as my dad, so this quilt holds special meaning to me as I attempted to preserve my heritage. Each block is created using fabrics, with images taken from pictures and drawings that I used as guidelines.The quilt is an original design, made from 100% cotton fabrics except for Newfoundland tartan, as I was unable to get this in cotton at the time. What makes this extra special to me is that my mom, Anne Vivian, hand quilted this for me, and in doing so, helped to preserve this tradition for the future generations in our family.
