Over 35 years ago, 32 women from across the country arrived at Depot Division anxious to participate in the police training offered by the RCMP. Nothing could have prepared them for the friendships that would be forged and as they, and time, marched on, those bonds only grew stronger. Following a rigorous six-month program, 30 of them, known as Troop 36, graduated on Sept 8, 1975. The first troop reunion was held 15 years after graduation and to date, it boasts our largest attendance (19). Subsequent reunions have been held every five years since. For the first time, Newfoundland and Labrador provided the backdrop when members of Troop 36 converged here during July of this year. Fourteen women arrived from all regions with only two having previously experienced our unique hospitality. Their host, regimental number 32350, ensured everyone had a bed (or at least a mattress) at her home in Mount Pearl. The women were treated to the finest of NL fare in food, song, and scenery. The first days were spent ‘catching-up’, hugging, and sipping seafood chowder. The women were treated to a day-on-the-bay, courtesy of Mr. Greer Hunt of Hunt’s Transport. While the whales were scarce that day, the trip proved to be one of the reunion highlights. The spectacular tuna-fishing boat was skippered by Rene Perrin (SJRFD) while “tour guides” Sean Roche (Insp. RNC) and Paul Dawe (Sgt. RNC) provided the commentary and the "stories." Amazing to Mr. Perrin was the ability of the CFAs (Come From Aways) to withstand the rough seas. Another day saw the group enjoy NL's most well-known street. Following a wonderful luncheon, courtesy of Jerome and Nancy Coady of Bridie Molloy’s, the troop visited historic sites including Cape Spear and Signal Hill, with a scenic drive to Middle Cove Beach (where many a toe was dipped into the Atlantic) and then on to the Grotto in Flatrock. A return to George Street (and Bridie Molloy’s) proved a good decision as the delightful music of Siochana drew them to the dance floor. (It’s always fun to watch CFAs dance a jig.) The next day was filled with sight-seeing and shopping. The evening meal (a 22-lb locally-raised turkey) was prepared by Sean (who was also responsible for the delicious chowder) and thoroughly enjoyed by all. This feast was followed by the traditional Screech-In ceremony, splendidly emceed by Paul. While it took only minutes for the cod to be kissed, the "Newfie steak" to be eaten, and the screech to be consumed, it would be hours before the laughter subsided. (The lip-smacking cod was still a hit the following day when it was cooked for supper.) During the last full day of activities, the women enjoyed an amazing lunch at the Atlantica Restaurant in Portugal Cove prepared by Wayne and Elaine Turpin. While finishing dessert – a lavish array of NL berries – whales could be seen in the cove through the dining room window. The karaoke planned for the evening had to be cancelled as no one had a voice left. The women sported hats from the Downhome store (with NL expressions, of course) for the duration of their trip. The feedback from the women in attendance for the reunion was nothing short of amazing. All were smitten with the sights and sounds of our province with some touting it as: "the best-kept secret ever." This has been labelled our BEST reunion thus far – due in large part to the generous contributions from Greer Hunt, Sean Roche, Paul Dawe, Rene Perrin, and Jerome Coady. Honourable mention goes to Pike’s brother-in-law, Rene Fowler, for the use of his seven-passenger van that helped in getting the women out and about. Your kindnesses were very much appreciated. The troop also paid special tribute to a fallen comrade, Joanne Horne, who passed away from injuries sustained in a car crash.
